Show your support for a #plasticfreefuture with La Lucia Mall and The Magic Bean Foundation by pledging to stop using plastic shopping bags and switching to using re-usable environmentally friendly shopping bags instead!

The Magic Bean Foundation are a non-profit organisation that trains women from the Umlazi G Section Community to utilise recyclable materials and turn them into practical and reusable items that they can sell to make a living. These items range from bags and hats to table mats, pot holders and more and are made through the art of crochet.

The organisation’s aim is towards creating a cleaner planet by using materials that would otherwise end up on our streets and oceans, whilst empowering unemployed women from the community by equipping them with the skills and knowledge to use these items and turn them into beautifully handmade South African influenced creations!

Visit the #plasticfreefuture activations and bring in your pre-used clean shopping packets and bread packets. All the packets collected during the #plasticfreefuture campaign go to the Magic Bean Foundation. The Magic Bean Foundation will also be selling their merchandise and demonstrating to shoppers how they crochet items from plastic packets.

This year you are also encouraged to collect and donate clean plastic bottle caps from milk and soda bottles. These can be placed in the giant fish at the activation and will in turn be used for creating murals as well as donated to foundations that use these items while teach and training.

The activation is interactive and you are invited to volunteer to help cut the plastic packets to make plarn (plastic yarn).

The dates for the Magic Bean Foundation activations are 24 – 31 May, 5 – 10 June.
